The Rom-Com Agenda By Jayne Denker Book Review

Rating: 2.5 Stars

Release Date: January 10, 2023

Format: Audiobook

Publisher: Dreamscape Media

About the Book:

You know how the story's supposed to go... but love makes its own plans.

STEP 1: Find yourself

Leah Keegan is used to being alone, especially after taking care of her sick foster mother for the past year. But now there’s nothing keeping her in the sweet town of Willow Cove. It’s time to move on. Again.

STEP 2: Win back the one who got away

Eli Masterson thought he and Victoria were meant to be together until she decided to jet off to Rome for a year. Eli is determined to win her back. But how?

STEP 3: Become a romantic hero

Changing Eli’s physical appearance is easy, but to turn Eli into the sophisticated-yet-vulnerable ideal man, his girl pals force him to watch classic rom-coms. And take notes.

STEP 4: Fall in love?

Inadvertently drawn into the makeover scheme, Leah ends up being Eli’s guide through the wild world of meet-cutes and grand gestures. Even though she believes Eli doesn’t need to change a thing about himself. Even though she just might be falling for Eli . . . and Eli falling for her.

Review:

I wanted to like this book I really did. The premise was there, the characters were lovable and had their own distinct personalities but it is just forgettable. I think that is the sad part there was nothing wrong with the book just nothing memorable either. I finished this book about 3 days before writing this because I genuinely forgot about it.

Leah was sweet, dealt with a lot, and had a great story on her own. But to me, there was just sooo much emphasis placed on Eli getting his ex back that none of his family even liked! I don't understand why the people who were closest to him couldn't give him some tough love and say "hey dude, get over it she sucked and you are better off without her."

I did like all of the references to the rom-com movies and giving him a "make-over" I just wish Eli wanted to do it for himself and not to get back a girl he only dated for 4 months and he is STILL hung up on it over a year later. I get that it is all a call back to the movies but it was a bit too on the nose for me.

🌶️ Spice Meter 🌶️ : 0 out of 5 Peppers

Closed-door romance so no hanky-panky on the page.

The audiobook narrator, Erika Schindele, did a wonderful job. I don't think I would have enjoyed this book nearly as much if it hadn't been for her giving them a personality.

Final Thoughts: Overall, this was just an ok read for me. It felt rushed and had great bones but the execution wasn't there for me. If you like Hallmark romance of the week, where there is not a lot of depth from the characters you might like this quick read.
